“Oh, no, Skye. You’re not strong enough yet.”

That was about what Fargo had expected. He leaned back in his chair and smiled. “I wouldn’t want to have to wrestle a grizzly bear right now,” he said, “but I reckon I’m in good enough shape to ride to Fort Laramie and back.”

“What if you run into trouble along the way and have to fight?” Grace insisted.

Fargo shrugged. “Getting out of bed in the morning is a risk, Grace. A person who never takes any chances isn’t really living.”

From his chair on the other side of the table, Josiah Prescott chuckled and said, “So old Chalk took him another wife, did he? Never thought I’d see the day. After the first one passed on, Buckland turned into quite a ladies’ man, but he never gave any hint he wanted to settle down with just one gal again.”

“Did you know this Maria Esperanza when you were down in New Mexico?” Fargo asked.

Prescott shook his head. “No, but I knew the fella who must be her pa. Don Diego Esperanza. Tough old bird. Had a passel of young’uns, so I guess Maria must be one of them. You got to remember it’s been quite a few years since I saw any of these people. If the gal wasn’t full-growed yet when I was there, I wouldn’t remember her.”

“I think it’s terrible, Buckland marrying such a young woman,” Grace put in. “Why, he’s probably old enough to be her father!”

Fargo sipped his coffee and didn’t say anything. Given her current mood and her opinion of Chalk Buckland, Grace was likely to disapprove of anything the man did, no matter what it was.

Prescott said cannily, “You don’t think he’s just tryin’ to get you out of the way, do you, Fargo?”

“The thought crossed my mind,” Fargo admitted. “But my gut says Buckland is telling the truth. He can’t be in two places at the same time. He’s worried about his wife getting here safely, and he’s worried about the settlers causing more trouble.”

Grace exclaimed, “He’s the one who’s causing all the trouble.”

“He claims he isn’t. In fact, from the sound of what he said, he blames Royce Stanton for stirring things up.”

“That’s crazy. Royce is just trying to get the settlers to stand up for themselves and not let Buckland run roughshod over them.”

“Somebody’s been raisin’ a ruckus in the basin,” Prescott said. “Them fields didn’t burn themselves, and the stock that’s been shot or run off ain’t to blame for that, neither. Not to mention the men who’ve been gunned down from ambush.”

What the old wolf hunter said was true, Fargo mused. Someone was raising havoc in the basin. The settlers on one side and Buckland on the other were the only inhabitants of this still mostly wild country.

Unless someone was lying low, keeping out of sight, deliberately trying to stir up trouble. . . .

It was an intriguing notion, but Fargo had no idea if there was even a shred of truth to it.
